My New Years Resolution is Not to have a Resolution

Happy New Year!

It’s that time of year, ladies and gentleman! A shiny, bright 2018 where sky’s the limit. With the hope of the new year, the oh-so-common New Years Resolution makes its annual return. So what is mine, you ask? I guess the title says it all. My New Years Resolution is to never have a New Years Resolution.

Why? Simply put, I think resolutions set you up for failure. I am a massive advocate in letting go of bad habits and cultivating good ones, why would I want the shiny, hopeful attitude of a fresh new year be squandered by a failure I could have easily avoided? Don’t get me wrong, failure is a key part of life, but resolution failure IS NOT.

Who Started this Trend, Anyway?

To be completely honest, I do not know how or when resolutions became so grandiose. If yours is in fact larger than your typical everyday life, there is no way you are sticking to it. You’ll probably give up on it before you even really started. A resolution should not be misconstrued as a goal. Goals (long term “things” you want to accomplish) SHOULD be set every year. Your resolution should be a small step towards that goal.

You do not need to ban resolutions like me. However, make your resolution realistic and attainable. Allow it to be a stepping stone in the right direction of your yearly goal(s). This type of resolution will be achievable in the first few months of the year, kicking your year off with the hope you had weeks before and days after the new year began.

Life Goals

Here are a few goals that I am almost certain everyone desires, followed by resolutions that can be made towards that goal:

  • Genuine Love

    • Resolution: Every time you take a drink of water (if you are not drinking water daily, let this knock two resolutions down with one stone), say out loud or write (on anything) something genuinely wonderful about yourself.

Tip: Genuine love comes from within. If that is lacking in your life, you will receive it when you start giving it to yourself. Start loving on yourself by making your resolution an easy love fest while accomplishing a secondary resolution of drinking more water. The more water you drink the more love you can give yourself. Water is the elixir of life so the more water you drink, the healthier and more vibrant you will be. See where I am going with this? 

  • Healthy Relationships 

    • Resolution: Spread gratitude instead of negativity by replacing “I’m sorry’s” with “Thank you’s”. For example, “I’m sorry I am late,” gets replaced with “thank you for waiting for me,” or “I’m sorry I am such a mess,” gets replaced with “Thank you for caring about me unconditionally.” This will not only shift the way you feel about yourself but it will entirely enhance and improve your relationships when you stop making empty apologies and replace it with thoughtful words of gratitude. (Disclaimer: There is a meme of this on the interwebs, but it’s so powerful that I had to reiterate it here, in my own words of course.)

Tip: Notice how this resolution also moves you closer to that first goal of genuine love. Our desires are more linked and connected than we ever allow ourselves to believe.

  • Financial Stability

  1. Are you a daily Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or coffee/tea buyer?
  2. Are you someone who buys lunch everyday or more than 3 times a week?
  3. Do you have a savings account?
  4. Are you willing to challenge yourself to learn new innovative ways to make money other than your job?

If you answered YES to any of the questions or all of them? Here are some resolutions:

    • Make your lunch(es) the night before or on the weekend, pack it and bring a lunch to work.
    • Buy your favorite coffee by the bag or jar and make it at home.
    • Transfer up to $5 a day or minimum $2 a day into a savings account.
    • Make a resolution to read a book on money management, investing for dummies, easy ways to monetize hobbies or the power of habits.
      • For example, if you love to knit or crochet: make a couple of staple pieces every week, sell them on craigslist/etsy/social media to friends, co-workers, family and interested strangers.

Tip 1: When money is out of sight, it is much harder to spend it frivolously on coffee or lunch or beer at a whim. Be amazed on how much you save when you forego daily “conveniences.”

Tip 2: People spend so much money on these staple items, let them spend that money on you.

The Extreme Queen

I tend to be extreme when I do things; it is the Aries in me. Of course, I am still opting to ditch the resolutions altogether. This is not going to be realistic for all of you. With that in mind, I wanted to leave you an easy road map to get more of what you want out of life. Be ready to let go of 2017 because, 2018 is going to be marvelously AWESOME.     1. Hi Shawnda! Thank you for sharing that with us. I would recommend starting off with substitution. Is there anything in your diet you can substitute out for a healthier alternative? If you are a bread lover, maybe anytime you want bread replace it with leafy greens or vegetables. Another example would be if you love juice or soda, replace it with still water (add a lemon, lime or cucumber for flavor) or sparkling water. These two things alone are way more manageable than overwhelming yourself with a set weight loss goal and should help you attain a healthier you that you are happier with. Big Hugs and Love on your journey.

  1. Thank you for your recent post. Replacing sorry with thank you. I put the suggestion into practice not 5 minutes after reading the artice. A text that needed to be said, but was weighty and in direct opposition to a loved one. Not wanting to hurt them and not wanting to hurt me left me in an uncomfortable spot. Saying ‘”Thank You” instead of “sorry” completely changed the concersation for the better. What an amazing idea!
