Pale’s Pit Paste

The ingredients toa blissful alternative to store-bought deodorant/antiperspirant.

Pit Paste?

Back in April of last year, I decided to give up traditional deodorant/antiperspirant.

To each his own if you’re a lover of yours! I get it. I just couldn’t find one that I prized anymore. For me, it was no longer worth the risks that come with spreading aluminum onto my body day in and day out. I’m also convinced antiperspirant companies have all changed their formulas in recent years. Literally none of them smell good to me anymore, not to mention I don’t think they work as well either. They probably just want everyone to spend more money on their “clinical” options (CONSPIRACY much??). I won’t even get started on that!

Badiana gave up using deodorant altogether a while ago. Although I admire her spunk, I don’t quite have that much chutzpah – I sweat and I’m not a fan of it! My obsessive tendencies simply won’t allow me to go without. Enter Pale’s Pit Paste, AKA my homemade, au naturale option!

What You’ll Need

  • 2-3 tablespoons of unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil
    • Fights the odor-causing bacteria while simultaneously moisturizing the skin and providing a nice scent
  • 6 tablespoons of cornstarch
    • Antiperspirant
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
    • Absorbs odor
  • Small squeeze of vitamin E oil
  • 10-15 drops of tea tree essential oil
    • Adds a nice scent and is also antibacterial
  • 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil (or whatever scent you’d like!)
  • Small container

Directions

Ready for how complicated this is going to be?

  1. Put everything in a bowl.
  2. Mix.
  3. Transfer said mixture to your small container.

DONE.

Sometimes, if it’s cold, I melt the coconut oil in the microwave to make it easier to mix. That’s literally the most difficult part, if you can even call it that.

Add the ingredients to the bowl.  Mix all of the ingredients.  Place mixture in adorable little container.

Getting Acclimated

When I first tried my mixture, it only worked for a few hours before I started to stink. My body took a couple of weeks to fully get used to not having the manufactured product on every day. I’m glad I got this stage of the process over with while it was cooler instead of trying to deal with it while sweating to death in the summer heat!

I viewed this transitional experience as the detox phase of giving up traditional deodorant. Just as it is when you use basically any product on a regular basis, your body starts to become dependent on it. I needed to kick-start my own system to work with more natural options. All it really took was a little patience, a package of baby wipes for a quick refresher midday, a couple applications of my homemade paste each day, and a little sense of humor. Now, I’m as good to go with a single application as I was when I was using the standard stuff before!

Baby Steps

In my journey to find my version of “healthy,” this was an important step. It was an easy decision for me to make the switch to a healthier option of something I use every single day because I was already unhappy with the product I was giving up. The daily items/habits that I could have healthier alternatives for are the ones I want to make the improvements on first, since they are the most prevalent in my life. I’m also a creature of habit, so when I am able to incorporate something better for me into my routine relatively seamlessly, it’s win-win and bound to stick!

This works for me! If it’s not for you, that’s totally fine too. All I know is I’m much happier with what I’m using now and I hardly had to change anything to do it.

Figure out your priorities, research your options, and remember to innovatively Decide Bliss.

  1. I’m glad I’m not alone in my dislike of traditional deodorant! I only use it maybe once a month, if that. Baby wipes are a life saver! I may have to try this approach so thanks for the recipe 🙂
